Main areas of research:

• Study of fire regimes of the main types of landscapes;
• Identifying features of fire damage to pine stands and developing of post-fire  mortality models;
• Determination of forest’s fire resistance criteria, taking into account the fuel load, weather conditions and anthropogenic loads;
• Fire risks assessment, development of science-based measures to increase forest fire resistance and reduce natural fire hazard in forested landscapes;
• Dendroindication of forest ecosystems by dendrochronological methods under the influence of climate change, recreational load, pollution and forest fires;
• Defining a system of indicators of forest stands deterioration by recreational degression stages in different natural zones;
• Clarification of allowed limits for anthropogenic load upon forest ecosystems;
• Generalization of the findings on how to select a range of tree and shrub species for green zones in industrial cities and settlements.

Findings:

• The main temporal and spatial trends of  fire occurrence in the natural zones of Ukraine were revealed;
• The role of different types of damage to pine trees during surface fires was investigated and measures to increase the fire resistance of forests were proposed;
• Models of post-fire tree and stand mortality  were created and preliminary criteria for post-fire development of fire-damaged stands were proposed;
• The scales of natural fire hazard was improved, based on a risk-oriented approach;
• Forest fire zoning of Ukraine and a system for assessing fire danger based on weather conditions for open landscapes were developed;
• The forest ecosystems dynamics under the man-induced load was investigated;
• Tree-ring chronologies were created by the annual ring width for various tree species in the context of Ukrainian natural zones in connection with atmospheric pollution, recreational load and fluctuations in the groundwater level;
• The main climatic and anthropogenic factors determining tree radial growth in a changing climate were revealed;
• Possibilities for adaptation of forest ecosystems to climate change were established.

Research prospects :

• Assessing and modeling of  fuel complexes (fuelbeds); development of adapted fuel models for Ukraine;
• Assessment of the direct and indirect impact of war on the changes in fire regimes in the landscapes of Ukraine; study of carbon losses due to fires;
• Fire risks assessment in the landscape level; climate change impact on the increaseing fire danger in Ukrainian forests;
• Development of science-based fire management plans;
• Study of changes in biodiversity in forest ecosystems according to different types and magnitude of fire damage.
