Main areas of research:

• Inventory and monitoring of state, yield, and biodiversity of forests;
• Forests and climate change;
• Predicting dynamics of forests' state under anthropogenic change of environment, scenario analysis of forest management as well as grounding the strategies of forest management;
• Usage of cutting-edge informational and measuring technologies to define forest mensuration ecological indicators of forest ecosystems and forest planning;
• Defining optimum conditions to preserve forest biodiversity as well as working out criteria for defining conservation value of forest lands and their conservation status;
• Forest certification.

Findings:

• developed the concept of Ukrainian forests monitoring, the methodology of organising and performing I-level forest monitoring;
• developed the methodology for monitoring of forest vegetation biodiversity;
• created the informative taxonomical base of forest vegetation of Ukraine; it is harmonised with the European base 'Flora Europaea';
• evaluated carbon storage in different reservoirs of forest ecosystems by natural-and-climatic zones;
• evaluated consequences of climate change impact upon plain forests of Ukraine;
• created a bank of perspective projects of joint implementation in forest management of Ukraine in accordance with Kyoto Protocol demands to United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change;
• predicted dynamics of Ukrainian forest resource indicators for different forest-management scenarios taking into account  anthropogenic loading and climate change;
• developed technological decisions on cutting-edge informational and measuring technologies usage (mobile GIS, ruggedized computers, measuring devices, GPS) in forest management;
• based on mobile GIS Field-Map, our experts created a technology for highly efficient field data collecting for forest, conservational and other objects;
• developed the concept of informational standard for forest field of Ukraine based on the current forest management regulations;
• created a prototype of XML format which allows forest geodatabase exchange among different software applications;
• provided scientific and expert support to the National cadastral survey of greenhouse gases in Ukraine when preparing national reports for United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and Kyoto Protocol; 
• developed the guidelines on development of forest certification in Ukraine based on sustainable forest use.

• Studying of forests' adaptive capability due to climate change and anthropogenic loading, working out measures to mitigate climate change consequences in forest sector.
• Implementation of novel informational and measuring technologies in forest management and nature protection.
• Improvement of the forest management methodology according to international requirements on sustainable forest use and forest management.
• Defining current and potential threats for biodiversity of forest species, groups and biotopes, workign out a set of measures to protect them and use them rationally.

The Laboratory studies Ukrainian forest ecosystems under anthropogenic transformation of environment in the following fields:

• Monitoring of Ukrainian forests' state, yield and biodiversity – working out a methodology and scientific support to ensure adjusting Ukrainian national forest monitoring to the methods harmonised with international forest monitoring programmes. The Laboratory is the National Coordination Centre of Forest Monitoring which facilitates carrying out pan-European forest monitoring programmes in Ukraine (UN-ECE ICP Forests) as well as monitoring of forests' state by the FHM USA technology (US Forest Health Monitoring). See more >>> 
• Climate change and forests – studying of carbon cycle in forests, assessment and monitoring how forests absorb greenhouse gases, analysis of forests' vulnerability to climate change and studying their adaptive capabilities, working out strategies on how forest sector should respond to climate change. • Forest certification – development of national criteria, indicators, and schemes to carry out certification based on the principles of sustainable forest use. Consulting on forest certification; we train forestry enterprises on how to carry out forest certification in accordance with international schemes. 
• Cutting-edge technologies for forest inventory and monitoring, distance exploration and GIS – development of scientific and methodological principles and technologies on how aerospace exploration can be used in forest monitoring as well as creation of problem-oriented GIS for forest monitoring, applying laser, sattelite technologies and ruggedized computers to assess both forest taxation and ecological parameters of stands. See more >>>
